Meeting with Missionaries in Rio

rio2012_1

24/11/2012 – a visit of the site for the closing ceremonies of the WYD in Rio; and a meeting with the young people who led the recent city mission for the western part of the city: these are the activities that marked the first day of the Pontifical Council for the Laity’s delegation currently in Rio de Janeiro.

Speaking to these young missionaries, Cardinal Ryłko, President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity said this: “a journalist once asked me what the Church in Brazil could offer to the young people of the world. I think that the most precious gift you can share is that of your faith: a faith full of joy and enthusiasm.

Continuing to address the 5 000 young missionaries taking part in a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Orani Tempesta, the Archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Ryłko recalled how Pope Benedict XVI had been very struck by the faith of the Brazilian people, during his visit to the country in March 2007. “The Pope said that in Brazil he had encountered a Church that is alive and missionary. You are this living and missionary Church”.

Referring to the Holy Father’s Message for the next WYD, Cardinal Ryłko underlined its insistence on the missionary role of young people, and on the need for young people welcome with open arms all those who are seeking the faith, just as the statue of Christ at Corcovado welcomes all with open arms.
